Just as over the last few years, this year too our school is firmly committed to organic farming. At our school, we have a total of 1286 m2 of area where we do our farming and vegetable gardening. This area comprises of the school terrace, the school grounds, the area near the front gate and the backyard of the school consisting of 61 cents of land.
On the terrace, 116.94 m2 of space is used to grow cabbage and cauliflower, 111.225 m2 of space is used to grow ridge gourd and snake gourd, 36.3m2 is used for bitter gourd, 149.3 m2 is used for ladies finger, 166.9 m2 is used for chillies, 23.35 m2 is used for palak, 398.4 m2 is used for spinach and long beans, 91.6 m2 is used for tomatoes, 41.25 m2 is used for clove beans and 96.75 m2 is used for brinjal.
On the backyard, we have colocasia, plantains, tapioca, papaya, elephant foot yam, guava and bread fruit. On the right side of the school we have brinjal, plantains, colocasia, chillies, sappotta, guava, ginger and turmeric. Along the sides of the school grounds, we have plantains, tapioca, brinjal and mango trees. Along the sides of the courtyard we have spinach, Chinese potato, tapioca, groundnut and ivy gourd.
At our school, we also have the very useful bio-gas and vermi-compost plant. We use the gas for cooking, and the organic slurry and manure are used for the vegetable garden along with the dung and urine that we get from our own cows that we have at the school.
We also use waste water by collecting it in a tank through proper pipes and channels and use it methodically.
We have put up 650 m2 of rain shelter on the terrace for which we have received Rs. 50,000 as aid from Krishi Bhavan. Nearly 1150 m2 of shade net has been put up on the terrace for which we have received Rs. 2 lakhs as aid.
Now, Krishi Bhavan has included us in the category of ‘Institution Garden’, and as part of this they are going to hand over an aid of Rs. 85,000.
